The Jackson School of International Studies was well represented at the 27th biennial Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) conference held in Seattle November 13-16, 2025. Four Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellows for French, Haida, and Inuktut received research awards or presented at the conference.
The conference featured:
- Tami Hohn (Puyallup), American Indian Studies, providing the conference welcome
- Director Nadine Fabbi receiving the Donner Medal, chairing for “The North and Arctic Studies through Diverse Perspectives” section, and chairing the UW student panel
- Professor Emma Elliot (Cowichan), FLAS fellow in French (2011), receiving of the 2025 Enders Research Award for her project “Indigenous Sovereignty and Cross-Border Jurisdiction: First Nations Children in the United States”
- Jackson School doctoral candidate Janessa Chinana (Haida), FLAS fellow in Haida (2022-23), receiving the 2025 ACSUS-Enders Graduate fellowship for her project “ZáadlaaGa Gwaayaay: Indigenous Border Nationhoods and Governance Across Settler-State Borders”
- Alex Henry, FLAS fellow in Inuktut (2024-25) presenting their paper “Journeys through Another Last Frontier: Early Diaries to YouTube Vlogs in the Canadian Arctic”
- Johnathan Tran, current FLAS fellow in French, presenting his paper “Canada and the International Dimension of the Vietnam War”
- Professor Sarah Kate Moore, FLAS fellow in French (2023-24) presenting with Professor Hedwige Meyer their paper “Teaching French as a Foreign Language through Indigenous Québécois Literature”
- Ric Berkhotlz, FLAS in Haida (2022-23), presenting on the panel “Columbia River Treaty: Transboundary Water Governance and Ethics”
- Jackson School junior, Ruby Keller, presenting her paper “Melodies, Memory, and Mobilization: Language, Cultural Preservation and Pride in Contemporary Inuit Music”
- UW social work professors Stan de Mello and Morna McEachern presenting on the Columbia River Treaty panel
ACSUS is a multi-disciplinary membership-based organization committed to raising awareness and understanding of Canada and the bilateral relationship with the United States. Since 1971, ACSUS has published the American Review of Canadian Studies a refereed, multidisciplinary, quarterly journal. ACSUS will meet in Ottawa in the fall of 2027.
