Sarah Kate Moore, FLAS fellow in French (2023-24) is now a part-time lecturer in the UW Department of French and Italian Studies.
“I was honored to attend the University of Laval’s Advanced Training for Teachers of French as a Foreign Language in Québec City this summer (2024), after graduating with my MA in French from UW and with the generous support of the Centre de la francophonie des Amériques and the UW French and Italian Studies Department. Thanks to this opportunity, I was able to spend two incredible weeks studying language pedagogy and Québécois culture with other French teachers from all over the world.
The support of an academic-year Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship from the Canadian Studies Center in the second year of my MA program was integral to my success in obtaining my master’s degree and gaining entrance to the summer program at University of Laval. Thanks to the FLAS, I was able to study Québécois language, literature and culture intensively with Professors Hedwige Meyer and Rich Watts. The award provided the financial and institutional support that allowed me to delve deeply into contemporary women’s poetry of Québec as well as into the complex relationships between French, English, and numerous Indigenous languages (particularly Innu and Inuktitut), which are among the many languages spoken in this fascinating region of the world. I fell headlong into Québécois literature and even ended up completing my master’s thesis on contemporary Québécois poet Anne-Marie Desmeules.
I’m delighted to be returning to the FIS Department this autumn as a Lecturer in French, and look forward to introducing my students to the languages and cultures of Québec!”
