2015 Ecosystem Studies of the Sub-Arctic Seas Annual Science Meeting

This year’s Ecosystem Studies of the Sub-Arctic Seas (ESSAS) Annual Science Meeting was hosted but the UW’s Future of Ice Initiative and various on-campus units and departments, including Canadian Studies, who contributed to the success of the meeting. With more than 90 attendees, including scientists and researchers from the U.S., Norway, Denmark, Japan, South Korea, and more, key Canadian scientists contributed to the meeting:

Kumiko Azetsu-Scott, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, “Decrease if carbonate saturation states by freshwater input from a variety of sources in Davis Strait”
Anne de Vernal, GEOTOP-UQAM, “Linking marine records of sea ice cover and productivity changes with archeological archives in western Arctic and sub-Arctic regions”
Max Friesen, University of Toronto, “The ultimate sea ice adaption? Archaeological implications of Inuinnait (Copper Inuit) winter life on the sea ice”
Anthony Gaston, Environment Canada, “Ice break-up and breeding among marine birds of the Easter Canadian Arctic”

Additionally, Canadian Studies Director, Vince Gallucci provided a paper, “The multiple roles of ice and inuit sustainability.”
