In partnership with the UW Tateuchi East Asia Library, TaiwanPlus, and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI), the UW Taiwan Studies Arts & Culture Program welcomes you to Love, Taipei—a pop-up exhibit at TEAL in November 2024 and an online film festival on TaiwanPlus (November 2024 and onward).
Love, Taipei is inspired by romance films set in the greater Taipei area. Curated by the TFAI and hosted on TaiwanPlus, the festival brings together eight digitally remastered Taiwanese films: HSIN Chi’s (辛奇) Foolish Bride, Naive Bridegroom 《三八新娘憨子婿》(1967), HOU Hsiao Hsien’s (侯孝賢) Cheerful Wind 《風兒踢踏踩》(1982), CHANG Yi’s (張毅) Kuei-mei, a Woman 《我這樣過了一生》(1985), TSAI Ming-Liang (蔡明亮) Rebels of the Neon God 《青少年哪吒》(1992) and Vive l’Amour 《愛情萬歲》(1994), YEE Chih-Yen’s (易智言) Lonely Hearts Club 《寂寞芳心俱樂部》(1995), LIN Cheng-Sheng (林正盛) Murmur of Youth 《美麗在唱歌》(1997), and CHEN Yi-Wen (陳以文) and CHANG Hwa-Kun’s (張華坤) The Cabbie 《運轉手之戀》(2000). Taking “Taipei’s urban style” and “love through the decades” as their central concepts, the eight directors present personal and era-specific views of love and the city of Taipei, revealing their shared passion for the city and the sentimental stories that have unfolded there.
