Tigers on the Mountain: Assessing “Is Taiwan Chinese?” Today with Professor Melissa J. Brown

October 8, 2021

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021,  the UW Taiwan Studies Program hosted Professor Melissa J. Brown for her talk, “Tigers on the Mountain: Assessing Is Taiwan Chinese? Today.” This recorded talk is available for viewing on our YouTube channel.

Since the release of Dr. Brown’s book in 2004, there have been many changes on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and in academia. Professor Brown revisited the main points of her book, discussed the contexts of the book’s creation, and assessed which conclusions still hold and which conclusions require revision.

Melissa J. Brown is Managing Editor of the Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies. She received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Washington-Seattle. She was on the faculty at the University of Cincinnati and Stanford University before going to the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard in 2011 and joining the HJAS staff in 2014.

This event was made possible by the generous support of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange.
