About

Prior to entering the JSIS Japan Studies 2019 MA cohort, Julie completed a double degree in History and National Security Studies at Coastal Carolina University in May 2019. Her primary research interests include Asian International Relations, the impact of atypical forms of warfare (particularly the emergence of cyber and space domains) in international security, Japanese law (with particular focus on Article 9 and successive policies regarding the role of Japan’s Self Defense Forces and intelligence services), and the Japan’s national security.
As a participant in the first Critical Language Scholarship Virtual Language Institute for advanced Japanese, Julie aspires to serve as a pathfinder for other first-generation college students seeking professional and graduate study (and the opportunities that accompany these paths).
