China Studies faculty Prof. David Bachman discusses President Trump’s visit to China in this interview by KOMO Radio. Bachman said Trump delivered appeasing statements in his public addresses but behind the scenes there were tough talks on trade relations and North Korea. This week, the China Studies Program held a retirement reception for Professor Stevan Harrell, who has taught at the University of Washington since 1974. Holding appointments in Anthropology and Environmental and Forest Sciences, Prof. Harrell’s specialization has distinguished those departments, as well as China Studies, as leaders in global research on ethnic minorities in China.

China Studies M.A. candidate Daniel Rechtschaffen has been awarded a Critical Language Scholarship in Mandarin for summer 2017! This scholarship, awarded by the U.S. State Department, funds eight weeks of intensive study in languages that the State Department considers critical to U.S. national security.
