Siiri Paananen addresses decolonization through museum design

May 27, 2025

In late April, the Department of Scandinavian Studies and the Jackson School for International Studies hosted Siiri Paananen, a design instructor and doctoral researcher in the Lapland User Experience Design group (LUX) at the University of Lapland, Finland. Paananen visited UW classrooms and gave a public lecture on the use of interactive technologies to decolonize museum design, with particular focus on Indigenous Sámi perspectives. Paananen highlighted her work with museums across the Nordic region to advocate for the use of digital tools to present Indigenous artifacts with greater context.
