In April, the Department of Scandinavian Studies and the Jackson School for Advanced Studies hosted Dr. Ilmari Käihkö, an Associate Professor of War Studies at the Swedish Defence University and a researcher at the University of Helsinki. Dr. Käihkö visited UW classrooms and gave a public lecture in which he addressed Finnish perspectives on the War in Ukraine. In particular, he examined how Finnish cultural memories of the Winter War in Finland have heavily shaped Finnish support for Ukranians, and he argued that the longer the war in Ukraine persists, the less applicable the comparison to the Winter War becomes.
