New book by Prof. Ted Mack

Faculty Spotlight: Ted Mack

January 27, 2022

In this new book, Ted Mack brings the writings of Japanese who emigrated to Brazil in the pre-war era to English language readers.  Aquired Alerity: Migration, Identity, and Literary Nationalism (UCPress 2022) is the first book-length study in English of the Japanese-language literary activities of early Japanese migrants to Brazil. It provides a detailed history of Japanese-language bookstores, serialized newspaper fiction, original creative works, and critical apparatuses that existed in Brazil prior to World War II.  It is available in hard copy, but also in a downloadable PDF thanks to University of California Press. See more information at UCPress.
