Book Prize for Professor Ted Mack

Faculty Spotlight: Ted Mack

December 19, 2023

Professor Ted Mack of the department of Asian Languages and Literature has been awarded the first Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for East Asian Studies by the Modern Language Association in recognition of his monograph Acquired Alterity:  Migration, Identity, and Literary Nationalism (University of California Press, 2022).  This is the first book-length study in English of the Japanese-language literary activities of early Japanese migrants to Brazil. It provides a detailed history of Japanese-language bookstores, serialized newspaper fiction, original creative works, and critical apparatuses that existed in Brazil prior to World War II.  Read more about the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize here, and about MLA here.
