Announcing: UW Japan Global Leadership Fellows Program with Waseda

September 23, 2024

The UW Japan Studies Program is pleased to announce that the Waseda Global Leadership Fellows Program (GLFP) is transitioning from its current home in the Honors Program to the UW Japan Studies Program effective October 1. Now in its 11th year the GLFP offers undergraduate students a chance to study a full year at Waseda within an international structure focused on leadership skills not part of the regular Waseda study abroad program. This program runs autumn to early summer each year.

GLFP is a program suitable for students who wish to excel on their own initiative with, in the words of the program director “spirit of the “Three C’s” which are Compassion (have compassion for others), Cooperation (cooperate with others), and Contribution (contribute to others).”  UW students will work with Waseda students and with students from other U.S. universities which are part of the GLFP cohort.

“I couldn’t have been happier that I selected GLFP; GLFP has exceeded all expectations, offering far more than a conventional study abroad program. Through the weekly ‘zemi’ classes, I delved deeply into subjects I had previously only skimmed the surface of, such as international business and Japanese postwar literature. Furthermore, the weekly forum classes prompted me to engage with pressing social issues, many of which I had not fully recognized or contemplated before due to the extent of their system city.” – Albert Kwong, UW GLFP participant. (See more testimonials on the GLFP website.)

Information sessions will be scheduled for October. Priority deadline to apply for the 2025-26 academic year is November 30 through UW Study Abroad.
