I am humbled and grateful to receive the FLAS award to continue my studies of the Portuguese language and lusophone cultures this academic year. During my graduate studies in Social Work and Public Health, I am intent upon learning Portuguese in order to incorporate both Spanish and Portuguese into my research studies and eventually into my social work practice, breaking down linguistic barriers in accessing mental health care locally and globally. The area studies component of this award ensures that I will ground my practice in cultural humility.

Obrigada!
