As an International Relations – China Studies MA student, the FLAS I received from the Center for Global Studies gave me the chance to travel abroad to Chengdu, China for a two and a half month immersion program. From this experience I have felt innumerable benefits relating to my language study, subject of specialization, and personal experience. Gaining a level of conversational proficiency in Chinese also allowed me to continue on to the next language level at UW with a degree of confidence and a renewed vigor. Because of this opportunity, I am able to better understand core concepts of Chinese culture that are so deeply intertwined in history and language. These concepts have become a part of my continued pursuit of Area Studies and will be integral in both academic and professional opportunities in the future.
