About

Chad Westra is a PhD student in the History Department researching modern China’s social, environmental, and material transformations through the lens of paper, with secondary interests in public intellectuals and Confucianism in contemporary China. He came to UW from his hometown in Dearborn, Michigan after working for several years as a grant writer for the Association of Chinese Americans. Chad has an MA in Chinese Studies from the University of Michigan and has spent time in Beijing and Taipei. He enjoys chess, following Detroit sports, and caring for the overgrowth of plants in his condo.
