TRAVESSIAS BRAZILIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2020
November 20 – November 29
This festival of contemporary Brazilian films gives marginalized voices the mic in discussions of race, sexuality, and governance. The 2020 fest runs Nov. 20–29, with short films about the ebbs and flows of life, identity, and belonging and fierce features on topics from student civic engagement to unearthing family legacies to the ties that bind (and break) community.
Curated by scholar of Brazilian cinema Emanuella Leite and with support from Professor and Director of the Center for Brazilian Studies Jonathan Warren, Travessias Brazilian Film Festival takes place via Northwest Film Forum’s virtual cinema.

MARACATU DE BAQUE VIRADO – TRADITIONAL BRAZILIAN RELIGIOUS AND PERFORMANCE ART
Monday, November 16, 3:00-4:00 pm
Maracatu de baque virado is an Afro-Brazilian musical culture and is the soundscape of the northeastern state of Pernambuco. It is a living musical treasure, with singular musical language and the originality and richness of its percussive thundering drums and call-and-response melodies. Come learn from Mestre Chacon and hear stories and the history of the beautiful tradition rooted in resistance!
Mestre Chacon is the son of Queen Elda Viana of Nação do Maracatu Porto Rico. Since his childhood, he has been present in the religious and cultural activities developed by the nação, building his vast Afro-Brazilian knowledge, especially in music and foundations of maracatu. He has traveled the world with Nação Porto Rico, and has performed and recorded with many Brazilian artists, such as Lenine, Cláudia Leitte, and Naná Vasconcelos.

FUNK CARIOCA: THE BOOMING SOUNDS OF RIO DE JANEIRO
Wednesday, November 18, 3:00-4:00 pm
Dr. Pedro Mendonça and MC Mano Teko will give a presentation on Funk Carioca or the funk music style developed in the comunidades of Rio de Janeiro. While Funk Carioca originated in Rio De Janeiro its popularity has spread across the country, Dr. Medonça and MC Mano Teko will be our guides on our journey of understanding the depth and importance of Funk Carioca.
Dr. Pedro Mendonça is a professor of music education at Colégio Pedro II, and holds a doctorate in ethnomusicology with focus on ethnography of musical practices from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. He has a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Aveiro, Portugal and a degree in music from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Mc Mano Teko is a 26-year-old MC do Funk, composer, and cultural producer. He participates in initiatives that help in the discussion Funk as Culture and for Rights.
