For Students
Graduate Student Association
About Us
The UW China Studies Graduate Student Association meets throughout the school year to build interdepartmental connections between graduate students studying China in different disciplines, discuss individual projects, and provide mentorship for newer students. Opportunities to gather occur at least monthly. You can find our full schedule here.

Coffee Hours
Curious what everyone thinks about the latest news out of China? Grab a coffee and join us! Our coffee hours are drop-in gatherings at a café near campus where we swap study tips, work through challenges from class, and chat about current affairs in China. It’s a laid-back way to get to know fellow grad students across programs and cohorts, and maybe even find your next mentor or collaborator.
Reading Group
Good books, great conversation, and pizza. Our reading group dives into works on modern and contemporary China, from Jonathan Spence’s The Search for Modern China to the writings of late Qing reformer Liang Qichao. No expertise required, just bring your curiosity.
Start- and End-of-Quarter Dinners
We kick off and wrap up every quarter with a dinner at one of our favorite spots on the Ave. It’s the perfect chance for new students to meet the community, for returning members to catch up after the break, and for all of us to celebrate making it through another quarter. Grad students from any department with an interest in China are warmly welcome.
Language Partners
Want to sharpen your Chinese or English? Our language partner program pairs native Chinese speakers with native English speakers to help each other build the language skills needed to thrive in the UW China Studies Program. And the coffee’s on us. CSGA provides funding for partners to meet up at one of the many cafés around campus or on the Ave.
