National awards, UW travel fellowship given to nearly a dozen Jackson School students

Nearly a dozen Jackson School students at the end of this spring quarter will continue to hone their leadership skills and deep knowledge of a region as recipients of national awards that promote global engagement. Almost 40 percent of Fulbright Scholar Awards at the University of Washington this year went to Jackson School undergraduates.

The six students, listed below, will immerse them in the cultures and language and conduct research in places like Austria, India, Oman, Taiwan and Turkey for the 2019-2020 academic year:

  • Azelle Bahadory, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to India
  • Kevin Lam, senior, Dance, International Studies majors: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Taiwan
  • Sarah Leibson, senior, International Studies; Korean majors: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Taiwan
  • Thomas Pham, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Turkey
  • Maya Sullivan, senior, Economics, International Studies majors: Fulbright Research Grant to Oman
  • Binh Truong, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Research Grant to Austria. Truong also received a Southeast Asia Center Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship for summer 2019, which will take her to Vietnam National University to study intermediate Vietnamese.
Angelia Miranda

Angelia Miranda, an international studies and philosophy major, heads abroad for eight months as a recipient of a Bonderman Travel Fellowship 2019-2020.

Thanks to receiving an eight-month Bonderman Travel FellowshipAngelia Miranda, an international studies & philosophy with departmental honors student, and Daniel Godfrey, a medical anthropology & global health with interdisciplinary honors; human rights, and international studies (minors) student, will each expand their understanding of themselves and the complex, diverse and interconnected world we live in through devising and undertaking a unique travel plan.

Miranda intends to trace a path alongside local celebrations of cultural, religious, and historical importance, and hopes to travel to Turkey, Mongolia, China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Argentina and Chile. As a student of global health and human rights who has read extensively about the rights of different people and places, Godfrey now seeks to gain a real-world understanding of our global community. He plans to travel to Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Nepal, India, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.

Conor Cunningham, international studies major and Boren Fellowship 2019-2020 recipient

One Jackson School undergraduate and one alternate were selected for a David L. Boren Fellowship for the academic year 2019-2020. Conor Cunningham, who graduates in June, will head to Latvia. In summer 2018, he received a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, awarded by the Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, to spend two months studying Russian in Moscow. Oliver Lang, an international studies major, is an alternate. Cunningham and Lang are two of the three UW students honored with a Boren award.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are sponsored by the National Security Education Program, a major federal initiative designed to build a broader and more qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills. In exchange for funding, Boren award recipients agree to work in the federal government for a period of at least one year.
