{"id":5579,"date":"2026-06-25T16:09:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T16:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/?p=5579"},"modified":"2026-06-25T16:17:51","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T16:17:51","slug":"help-sustain-the-uw-taiwan-studies-arts-culture-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2026\/06\/25\/help-sustain-the-uw-taiwan-studies-arts-culture-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Help Sustain the UW Taiwan Studies Arts &amp; Culture Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear friends and members of the Taiwan Studies Arts and Culture community:<\/p>\n<p>Since its founding in 2021, the Taiwan Studies Arts and Culture Program has brought dozens of filmmakers, performers, musicians, scholars, authors, and other artists to the University of Washington, Pacific Northwest, and North America.\u00a0\u00a0I am proud of what the program has\u00a0accomplished\u00a0under the leadership of Taiwan Arts and Culture Director Ellen Chang.\u00a0\u00a0Her vision has brought together scholarly research as well as creative voices and expressions to our community.<\/p>\n<p>The Arts and Culture Program was originally funded by a generous five-year grant from the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.\u00a0\u00a0Unfortunately, this funding is\u00a0running\u00a0out.\u00a0\u00a0Without further funding, the Taiwan Studies Arts and Culture Program will\u00a0end in\u00a0spring 2027.<\/p>\n<p>I am writing to ask for your support.\u00a0\u00a0To help save the Taiwan Studies Arts and Culture Program, we are launching a\u00a0fundraising campaign.\u00a0\u00a0Please consider supporting the program.\u00a0\u00a0We are particularly in need of a major gift\u00a0to secure the future of the Arts and Culture Program.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past four years, the Taiwan Studies Arts &amp; Culture Program has organized a wide range of initiatives that bridge\u00a0scholarship\u00a0and public life. Major examples include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2024\/01\/29\/taiwancalling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music, Island, Stories: Taiwan Calling!\u00a0(2024)<\/a>, a month-long collaboration with the Taipei Music Center (Taiwan) that transformed Taiwanese popular music into a platform for exhibitions, performances, lectures, and institutional exchange;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2025\/06\/23\/twpride2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taiwan Pride + Making Asia\u2019s First<\/a>\u00a0(2025), which combined public discussions on Taiwan\u2019s marriage equality movement with participation in Seattle Pride activities; our ongoing partnership with the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture (2022\u2013present), which has included the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2023\/04\/17\/encountering-hu-tai-li\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hu Tai-Li Memorial Program<\/a>\u00a0(2023),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2023\/10\/02\/kuroshio-odyssey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kuroshio Odyssey<\/a>\u00a0(2024\u20132025), and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2026\/05\/06\/unpfii2026seattle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seattle edition of the 2026 United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Series<\/a>, supporting exhibitions, workshops, screenings, and public programs centering Taiwan Indigenous knowledge within broader Pacific and global contexts; and our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2026\/05\/06\/228program2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continuing collaboration with the Memorial Foundation of 228 (Taiwan)<\/a>\u00a0through annual memorial programs combining exhibitions, guided tours, roundtables, and keynote lectures that deepen public conversations around the February 28, 1947 Incident, White Terror, transitional justice, Indigenous histories under authoritarian rule, and memory across Taiwan and the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p>I believe that the Taiwan Studies Arts and Culture Program has increased diversity in our community and helped foster the pursuit of arts and culture, and we hope to continue the program.\u00a0 Thanks for all of your\u00a0support\u00a0the past four years, and we hope to continue for many more years to come.<\/p>\n<p>You can make a gift to the Taiwan Studies Arts and Culture Program at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/SupportTSPArtsAndCulture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our website<\/a>.\u00a0 If you are interested in a major gift, please contact James Lin at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jyslin@uw.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jyslin@uw.edu<\/a>\u00a0and Jenny Poast at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jpoast@uw.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jpoast@uw.edu<\/a>.
