{"id":4437,"date":"2024-08-14T18:28:23","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T18:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/?p=4437"},"modified":"2024-10-22T20:16:58","modified_gmt":"2024-10-22T20:16:58","slug":"cfp-new-directions-in-taiwan-history-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/2024\/08\/14\/cfp-new-directions-in-taiwan-history-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Papers: &#8220;New Directions in Taiwan History&#8221; Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to share this call for papers for a Taiwan history workshop that the University of Washington Taiwan Studies Program is co-hosting with Princeton University and UC Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>Call for Papers<br \/>\nNew Directions in Taiwan History: Imperial, Colonial, and Postcolonial Histories<br \/>\nFebruary 28-March 1, 2025<br \/>\nPrinceton University<\/p>\n<p>This two-day workshop will bring together scholars working across the temporal range of Taiwan history, to share and discuss works-in-progress and findings from their research projects.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan has been called \u201cthe land that colonialisms made.\u201d In the past four centuries, the Dutch, Spanish, Zheng, Qing, Japanese, and the Republic of China ruled Taiwan and its peoples. We invite works that explore Taiwan\u2019s positionality under multiple empires and settler colonialism.\u00a0 \u00a0We welcome contributions on, but not limited to, indigenous histories, migration, the maritime world, environment, historical memory, political economy, and labor.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will be asked to pre-circulate a draft dissertation chapter, journal article, or book manuscript chapter. Senior scholars will comment on pre-circulated writing, and all participants will be expected to read and engage in the workshop discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Local accommodation (up to three nights), economy airfare or ground transportation, and meals will be provided for all participants. We especially welcome proposals from Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and contingent scholars.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first workshop of a three-part series, to take place at Princeton University (2025), the University of Washington, Seattle (2026), and UC Berkeley (2027).<\/p>\n<p>For consideration, send a proposal of 400-500 words describing the overall project and the excerpt to be presented at the workshop.
