On February 6, 2018<\/strong> join us for \u201cWhy Taiwan?<\/strong><\/a>\u201d \u2013 as UW Professor\u00a0Jeff Hou<\/a>\u00a0and Jackson School\u00a0Assistant Professor and historian of Taiwan\u00a0James Lin<\/a>\u00a0talk to Chang Tieh-Chih \u2013 Taiwanese political critic and former chief editor of Hong Kong\u2019s monthly City Magazine at\u00a0University of Washington\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>Kane H<\/strong><\/a>all<\/strong><\/a>, Room 110 at 7:00 p.m.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Long Road to Making Money\u201d<\/strong> Emeritus Professor Gary<\/a>\u00a0Hamilton<\/a> and Cheng-shu Kao,<\/p>\n

Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chair Professor of Management at Feng Chia University and Honorary Professor of Sociology at Tunghai University, present their thirty-year research project.\u00a0With their findings, Kao and Hamilton challenge the conventional interpretations of Asian industrialization and present a new interpretation of the global economy in the book \u201cMaking Money: How Taiwanese Industrialists Embraced the Global Economy<\/a>,\u201d Join us for the book-talk on February 20, 2018 at University of Washington\u2019s <\/strong>Husky Union Building<\/strong><\/a>, Room 332 at 7:00 p.m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Authors of Making Money: How Taiwanese Industrialists Embraced the Global Economy – Cheng-shu Kao and Gary Hamilton<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Taiwan Studies Program in Jackson School was launched at the end of 2017 to\u00a0help bring together expertise and knowledge of Taiwan and make these resources more available to students and public. The program plans to offer of courses,\u00a0conferences and community events, as well as exchange programs with higher education institutions \u2014 potentially in Taiwan itself \u2014 and across UW, that will include faculty and students.<\/p>\n

Other Taiwan themed events at the University of Washington include the exhibition:\u00a0Beautiful Island:\u00a0Taiwan\u2019s Journey to Democracy\u00a0<\/strong>that traces the history of Taiwan from a\u00a0Dutch entrep\u00f4t, a Chinese frontier, a Japanese colony, and as a Cold War redoubt for the Chinese Nationalist Party, to a prosperous democracy at present with a thriving civil society. You can visit the exhibit curated by Tieh-chih Chang between February 5 and March 14<\/strong>, at the\u00a0University of Washington\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>Allen Library Lobby<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>The exhibit is accessible during library\u00a0building hours<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
