Bi-khim Hsiao (Representative, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, Washington, DC, U.S.A.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Representative Bi-khim Hsiao assumed her position as Taiwan\u2019s Representative to\u00a0the\u00a0United States in July 2020, after serving as a Senior Adviser to\u00a0the\u00a0President at\u00a0the\u00a0National Security Council of Taiwan.<\/p>\n

Representative Hsiao previously served four terms in\u00a0the\u00a0Taiwan Legislature, representing overseas citizens for\u00a0the\u00a0first term, and then\u00a0the\u00a0constituents of Taipei City and Hualien County through different terms. For many years she was ranking member of\u00a0the\u00a0Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and previously\u00a0the\u00a0chair of\u00a0the\u00a0USA Caucus in\u00a0the\u00a0Legislative Yuan.<\/p>\n

She began her political career serving as Director of\u00a0the\u00a0Democratic Progressive Party International Affairs Department. After Taiwan\u2019s first democratic change of government in 2000, she became an Adviser in\u00a0the\u00a0Office of\u00a0the\u00a0President, and was international spokesperson for all DPP presidential elections between 2000 and 2012.<\/p>\n

Representative Hsiao has taken on numerous leadership roles in international organizations. She was\u00a0the\u00a0Chair of\u00a0the\u00a0Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), an organization representing Asian democratic political parties. Between 2005 and 2012, she was elected Vice President on\u00a0the\u00a0Bureau of Liberal International (LI), a London-based global political party organization.<\/p>\n

She is also a founding Board Member of\u00a0the\u00a0Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.<\/p>\n

Born in Kobe, Japan, Representative Hsiao grew up in Tainan, a city in southern Taiwan. She has an MA in Political Science from Columbia University in New York and BA in East Asian Studies from Oberlin College, Ohio.<\/p>\n

James Lin, Associate Chair of\u00a0the\u00a0UW\u00a0Taiwan Studies Program, is a historian of Taiwan and its interactions with\u00a0the\u00a0world in\u00a0the\u00a020th century. His research examines international agrarian development, beginning with rural reform and agricultural science in China and Taiwan from\u00a0the\u00a0early 20th century through\u00a0the\u00a0postwar era, then its subsequent re-imagining during Taiwanese development missions to Africa, Asia, and Latin America from\u00a0the\u00a01950s onward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
