To this end, we are excited to announce the launch of our new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCcnSCRLlEZhEYzHE9n-Zgxg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a>, where our new special online roundtable event &#8220;Containing COVID-19: A Look Into Taiwan&#8217;s Response to the Global Pandemic&#8221; can be viewed.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QcZ6ked52nM?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Join us for this discussion with journalist William Yang and researcher Jessica Drun on how Taiwan successfully\u00a0contained the spread of COVID-19, lessons\u00a0for the US and other countries, and how Taiwan&#8217;s response put Taiwan&#8217;s continued exclusion from the World Health Organization into the spotlight.\u00a0Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCcnSCRLlEZhEYzHE9n-Zgxg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0will also serve as a video archive of past program Events.<\/p>\n<h2>A Year in Review<\/h2>\n<h3>New Courses<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The inaugural Taiwan Studies Program summer study abroad course, Exploring Environmental and Social<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/9295d58ce85a585660f6fb131\/images\/89367623-72ff-4fc6-92ef-1ed6ff5d36bf.jpg\" width=\"363\" height=\"204\" \/>Resilience, concluded last summer with a whirlwind tour of Taiwan and hands-on education experiences focusing on the environment. Students from the course co-authored a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/uw-poe-taiwan-2019\/blogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog with their experiences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Weng&#8217;s course has been cancelled for Summer 2020 but is scheduled to resume in Summer 2021. More details about the course and the application can be found on our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/courses\/uw-study-abroad-exploring-environmental-and-social-resilience\/\">website<\/a>. UW students of any major are welcome to join in this special opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENVIR C 495\/JSIS C 484: Environmental Issues in East Asia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instructor: Yen-Chu Weng<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/courses\/environmental-issues-in-east-asia\/\">This course surveys contemporary environmental issues in East Asia<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, focusing on topics of pollution, waste, energy, environmental movements, and environmental policy, and how each country responds to the environmental challenges differently and with what consequences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JSIS A 472\/581 \/\/ IBUS 461\/561: Science, Technology and Innovation in East Asia\u2014Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instructor: Marie Anchordoguy<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/courses\/science-technology-and-innovation-in-east-asia-japan-south-korea-taiwan-and-china\/\">This course on Science, Technology, and Innovation Policies in East Asia<\/a>\u00a0provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to read a few key books and several articles on the role of the state and technological change in industrial development in an historical perspective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CMS 303: East Asian Genre Films\u2014Taiwan &amp; Beyond<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instructor: Yomi Braester<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/courses\/cms-303-east-asian-genre-films-taiwan-beyond\/\">This course inquires how film genres develop<\/a>, especially the concept and concept of \u201cminor cinemas.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Past Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>November 9, 2019: UW Converge Summit 2019<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/9295d58ce85a585660f6fb131\/images\/fbc24dda-1a80-4c64-b442-72d4ebef3abb.jpg\" width=\"728\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The UW Taiwan Studies Program was honored to be showcased at the 2019 UW Converge Summit in Taipei, a meeting of UW Alumni living in Taiwan and East Asia. Assistant Professor James Lin and Professor Jeff Hou introduced the Taiwan Studies Program and its plans to a receptive audience.\u00a0 James Lin also presented in a Law and Society panel on how Taiwan innovates in its technology and manufacturing industries. The Taiwan Studies Program provides current students, alumni, and greater Seattle with education and programming about Taiwan. We look forward to participating in future alumni events. Martin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Professor Jeffrey T. Martin, an anthropologist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, visited the Taiwan Studies Program on November 19, 2019 to give a talk on his new book\u00a0<em>Sentiment, Reason and Law: Policing in the Republic of China on Taiwan.\u00a0<\/em>Martin gave an engaging talk on the development of<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/9295d58ce85a585660f6fb131\/images\/dd742bf3-4368-46b6-a10b-323448ec30bc.jpg\" width=\"356\" height=\"267\" \/>the critical theory of police with a focus on the emergence of policed space in Taiwan. Martin paid specific attention to the concept of \u201cqing\u201d (sentiment) as the center of the state-society relationship in Taiwan that mediates the interactions between police and the communities they engage. Through his ethnography and theory of sentiment Martin explores the many intersecting worlds the Taiwanese police force moves through on a day-to-day basis, from supporting the neighborhoods they monitor to participating in activities that strengthen Taiwan\u2019s political economy.
