Strauss spoke about her recently published book,\u00a0<em>State Formation in China and Taiwan: Bureaucracy, Campaign, and Performance.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">This event was recorded and is available for viewing\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"State Formation in China and Taiwan with Prof. Julia Strauss\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UVTkv9nFaBw?start=5078&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This book is a comparative study of regime consolidation in the \u2018revolutionary\u2019 People\u2019s Republic of China and the \u2018conservative\u2019 Republic of China (Taiwan) in the years following the communist victory against the nationalists on the Chinese mainland in 1949. Julia C. Strauss argues that accounting for these two variants of the Chinese state solely in terms of their divergent ideology and institutions fails to recognize their similarities and their relative successes.\u00a0 Both, after all, emerged from a common background of Leninist party organization amid civil war and foreign invasion. However, by the mid-1950s they were on clearly different trajectories of state-building and development. Focusing on Sunan and Taiwan, Strauss considers state personnel, the use of terror and land reform to explore the evolution of these revolutionary and conservative regimes between 1949 and 1954.
