The Taiwan Studies Program may provide small grants to encourage and facilitate research on Taiwan and the presentation of Taiwan-related research at academic conferences.\u00a0 All University of Washington Taiwan Studies PhD students are eligible.<\/p>\n
Requirements.<\/i>\u00a0 Research project should:\u00a0 (1) be Taiwan-related; (2) have research-related expenses (including travel, materials, assistance, etc.)<\/p>\n
Submission<\/i>.\u00a0 Submit a one-page summary of the project and a budget up to $500.<\/p>\n
Timing.<\/i>\u00a0 Submit any time prior to the expenditure.<\/p>\n Requirements.<\/i>\u00a0Submitted papers should:\u00a0 (1) be Taiwan-related; (2) be a single- or first-authored paper; (3) be presented at a national or international conference requiring overnight travel.<\/p>\n Submission.<\/i>\u00a0 Submit the following: (1) the paper, and (2) a scan of the conference program title page and relevant panel page.<\/p>\n Timing.<\/i>\u00a0 Submit before or after<\/em> your conference presentation, but no more than 60 days after.<\/p>\n Send all submissions as a pdf file to the Taiwan Studies Program Chair at jyslin@uw.edu. Submissions will be considered by a committee of the Taiwan Studies Program. Grants will be awarded in the order received. Preference will be given to students who have not previously received a grant. Awardees must be enrolled in the quarter that the funds are disbursed, and have direct deposit on their student account. Research projects and papers will be listed on the Taiwan Studies website.<\/p>\n The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is tailored for students who wish to focus exclusively on the study of Chinese language. Recipients of this scholarship will be given a stipend of NT$ 25,000 (approximately US$800) per month for 2, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months of study at a university-affiliated language center. Please note that the 2 month scholarship is reserved for a Summer Course in either June-July or July-August. Through this scholarship, GTI hopes to encourage scholars and policy practitioners to pursue research about Taiwan that are informed by their observations and experiences within the island-democracy. Scholarship recipients will be granted USD $10,000 to support field research in Taiwan for a term of up to one year. Upon awardees\u2019 completion of the field research, they will submit a 10,000 to 15,000-word report of their findings. American researchers and professionals with a demonstrated interest in policy-relevant research related, but not limited, to Taiwan\u2019s democratic development, politics, security, international relations, economy, and social changes are welcome to apply. Doctoral students conducting dissertation field studies are also encouraged to apply. Please note that applicants must secure a partner institution in Taiwan prior to departure for Taiwan. Applications are due in August.<\/p>\n Fulbright Taiwan<\/a> offers grants to study or perform research, to enroll in a Master’s or Doctoral degree program, or to assist in English teaching in Taiwan.\u00a0 Applicants should be recently graduated bachelor’s degree students, currently enrolled graduate students, or young career professionals.\u00a0 Individual study\/research programs allow for an open proposal to Taiwan, and recently Fulbright Taiwan has added awards for specific graduate degrees in a variety of humanities, social science, management, and STEM fields.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Critical Language Scholarship<\/a> (CLS) is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply, and the program length lasts eight to ten weeks during the summer. The partner institution in Taiwan is the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. The CLS is a program of the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\n The Boren Awards<\/a> fund undergraduate<\/strong> and graduate<\/strong> students for long-term linguistic study and cultural immersion experience.\u00a0 Taiwan is a Boren Award preferred country for studying Chinese.\u00a0 Applications are due at the end of January of each year.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, due to discontinuation of Title VI funding, we are not accepting applications for Summer 2026 and AY 2026-27 FLAS Fellowships.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS)<\/a> supports UW undergraduate, graduate and professional students in acquiring modern foreign languages and area or international studies competencies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The summer FLAS subsidizes tuition and provides a stipend for studying foreign languages, and this includes studying Chinese language at universities in Taiwan.
