Jackson Endowed Professor of Law and South Asia Center affiliated faculty, was recently featured in The Whole U for her work on human rights policies. In her more than two decades at the University of Washington, Ramasastry has helped write uniform laws on human trafficking that have been adopted by many U.S. states, and has worked with organizations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihrb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute for Human Rights and Business<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparency.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transparency International<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Witness.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9336\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 225px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9336 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/08\/Ramasastry-Anita-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/08\/Ramasastry-Anita-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/08\/Ramasastry-Anita.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anita Ramasastry<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ramasastry has also been at the forefront of the business and human rights field, which examines the ways in which business enterprises affect human rights. This work culminated in her tenure as chair of the Working Group on Business and Human Rights for the United Nations, where she strove to implement the\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/publications\/guidingprinciplesbusinesshr_en.pdf\">Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was previously made invisible is now visible,\u201d Ramasastry said in The Whole U piece. \u201cYou have historians and journalists and other watchdogs exposing [human rights] issues. We are aware that corporations and consumers can be connected to harm halfway around the world. We have frameworks\u2014like what I\u2019ve worked on with the UN\u2014that are attempting to address these issues.
