Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Department of Asian Languages & Literature at the University of Washington seeks to appoint a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor in Hindi. The initial appointment, starting Autumn Quarter 2024, is for three years, with the possibility of renewal. The successful applicant will be expected to teach Hindi language courses at all levels, with the possibility of teaching courses in literature, linguistics, or culture. In addition, they will develop curricular and teaching materials, conduct placement tests, occasionally train and supervise teaching assistants, and perform departmental committee service.<\/p>\n

The Seattle region has a vibrant and growing South Asian community with multiple cultural events. The University of Washington has a Title VI funded South Asia Center that sponsors faculty activity and travel. The Department of Asian Languages and Literature offers a major and minor as well as a graduate program in South Asian languages. Teaching professors engage in teaching, service, and, optionally, research. They are voting members of the faculty and have a career path that includes the ranks of Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. This position is non-tenure-track and the university is employment is for a 9-month (mid-September through mid-June) service period. Teaching Professors can apply for sabbatical leave.<\/p>\n

Qualifications <\/strong><\/p>\n

Applicants must have at least an M.A. (or foreign equivalent degree) in Hindi language or literature, or another related area. Also required are native or near-native proficiency in Hindi, fluency in English, and at least one year of experience teaching Hindi as a foreign language at the US college or university level (or equivalent system abroad).<\/p>\n

Priority will be given to complete applications received before November 1, 2023. Complete applications include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, diversity statement, one-page statement of teaching philosophy that provides a plan to establish an inclusive teaching environment, sample of syllabi for an elementary and an intermediate Hindi course, and selected teaching materials, recent student evaluations, and three letters of professional references.
