Over the last year, faculty affiliated with the South Asia Center published ample scholarly articles, book chapters and reviews on diverse topics related to South Asia. From global health to climate change, politics and culture to gender and literature, our faculty engage in lively debates and make important contributions to the field of South Asia Studies across the disciplines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

David Citrin<\/b> in an article in<\/span> The Canadian Press <\/span><\/a>explains the COVID-19 crisis and shortage of vaccination in reference to Nepal. He has contributed to collaborative research articles on a variety of topics pertaining to rural Nepal, including<\/span> Maternal and child health care<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>assessment of data collected by community health workers<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>adolescent girls and sexual reproductive health<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>cross-cultural adaptation of motivational interviewing<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>collaborative care model for depression in rural Nepal<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> and<\/span> health system gaps in cardiovascular disease prevention and management in Nepal.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span> Environmental Science and Technology,<\/span><\/a> Julian D Marshall <\/b>published findings from a study conducted in India on the effects of stove use patterns and indoor air quality (IAQ). Additionally, he has co-authored articles on air pollution in various journals, including <\/span>Environment International<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Development Engineering<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> and <\/span>Environmental Health Perspective<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With Nives Dolsak, <\/span>Aseem Prakash<\/b> regularly publishes a <\/span>column in Forbes<\/span><\/a> on climate change and politics.<\/span> In addition, he co-authored an article about a survey experiment in Dhaka, Bangladesh on<\/span> climate migrants<\/span><\/a>.<\/b> His co-authored article<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Do policy clashes between the judiciary and the executive affect public opinion? Insights from New Delhi\u2019s odd\u2013even rule against air pollution<\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/span> was published in the Journal<\/span> of Public Policy. With UW alum <\/span>Rafeel Wasif<\/b>, he co-authored a news article in <\/span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/a> on Pakistan<\/span>\u2019s relationship with NGOs after the massive flooding in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sunila S. Kale and Christian Lee Novetzke<\/b> co-authored a book chapter<\/span> The Cultural Politics of Yoga in India and the United States<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>At Home and Abroad: The Politics of American Religion.<\/span><\/i> Manish Chalana<\/b> published an article discussing the <\/span>migration of South Asians to the North American West Coast<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Jennifer Dubrow <\/b>published a <\/span>book review<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>The<\/span><\/i> Visceral Logics of Decolonization<\/span><\/i> by Neetu Khanna. <\/span>Heidi Pauwels <\/b>published reviews of<\/span> A Genealogy of Devotion: Bhakti, Tantra, Yoga, and Sufism in North India<\/span><\/a> by Patton E. Burchett,<\/span> A Storm of Songs: India and the Idea of the Bhakti Movement<\/span><\/a> by John Stratton Hawley, and <\/span>Monastic Wanderers: N\u0101th Yog\u012b Ascetics in Modern South Asia<\/span><\/a> by V\u00e9ronique Bouillier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Purnima Dhavan<\/b> co-authored an article with <\/span>Heidi Pauwels<\/b> named <\/span>Crafting literary Urdu: Mirza Hatim\u2019s engagement with Vali Dakhani<\/span><\/a> in the Journal of Modern Asian Studies. She also published a<\/span> review of the book<\/span><\/a> Asa Johal and Terminal Forest Products: How a Sikh Immigrant Created B.C.\u2019s Largest Lumber Company<\/span><\/i> by Jinder Oujla-Chalmers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aria Fani <\/b>published two articles discussing<\/span> Persian Literary and Cultural Production in the Twentieth Century<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Disciplining Persian Literature in Twentieth-Century Afghanistan<\/span><\/a> in a special issue of Iranian Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Radhika Govindrajan<\/b> reviewed the book<\/span> Crooked Cats<\/span><\/i>: <\/span><\/i>Beastly Encounters in the Anthropocene<\/span><\/i><\/a> in a recent issue of Conservation and Society Journal. <\/span>Alka Kurian <\/b>published an<\/span> article about Indian films, webseries, and feminism. <\/span><\/a>Sudhir Mahadevan<\/b> published articles discussing the Indian film <\/span>Badnam Basi<\/span><\/i> (1971)<\/span><\/a> in the 2021 issue of South Asian Popular Culture. His other article<\/span> Obsolescence<\/span><\/a> is published in BioScope: South Asian Screen Studies journal. He also penned down a review of the book<\/span> Bombay Hustle: Making Movies in a Colonial City<\/span><\/i><\/a> by Debashree Mukherjee, and<\/span> Dancing Women: Choreographing Corporeal Histories of Hindi Cinema<\/span><\/i><\/a>, by Usha Iyer<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joe Marino <\/b>published two articles<\/span> in<\/span> Journal of Gandh\u0101ran Buddhist Texts about<\/span> Suhadukha Sutra<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Mahapara\u1e0daha Sutra<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Richard Saloman <\/b>published an article on reinterpretation of<\/span> Chhoti Sadri inscription of the Manavayani king Gauri (490-91 CE)<\/span><\/a> in Journal of American Oriental Society. His article on <\/span>Anavatapta-g\u0101th\u0101<\/span><\/a> is published in <\/span>Journal of Gandh\u0101ran Buddhist Texts. He also reviewed the book <\/span>Georg Biihler’s Contribution to Indology<\/span><\/a> by Amruta Chintaman Natu<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vikramaditya Prakash <\/b>co-edited the book <\/span>Rethinking global modernism: architectural historiography and the postcolonial<\/span><\/i><\/a> published in 2022. <\/span>Anis Rahman<\/b> published an article in the Journal of Digital Media & Policy about <\/span>Broadcast policy-making in an electoral authoritarian regime in Bangladesh<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Priti Ramamurty <\/b>co-authored two articles in Feminist Studies Journal,<\/span> Special Issue on Feminism and Capitalism<\/span><\/a> & <\/span>The Gender of Value: Punctuated Violence and the Labor of Care<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Chandan Reddy<\/b> wrote a chapter in the edited book <\/span>Keywords for Gender and Sexuality Studies. <\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
