{"id":8492,"date":"2022-01-30T01:02:22","date_gmt":"2022-01-30T01:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/?p=8492"},"modified":"2022-02-01T01:03:22","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T01:03:22","slug":"christian-lee-novetzke-awarded-national-endowment-for-the-humanities-fellowship-for-book-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/news\/christian-lee-novetzke-awarded-national-endowment-for-the-humanities-fellowship-for-book-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian Lee Novetzke awarded National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for book project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jackson School Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/people\/christian-novetzke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Lee Novetzke<\/a>\u00a0has received a prestigious fellowship from the National Endowment Humanities (NEH) 2022 for his new book project titled, \u201cA Flower of Fire: Religion, Caste, and Gender in the Political Poetry of Savitribai Phule (1831\u20131897).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book on Savitribai Phule, a \u201clow-caste\u201d or Shudra social reformer of the 19th century, will explore her political poetry and thought on a wide range of subjects, including religion, caste, gender, history, slavery, colonialism, and education.<\/p>\n<p>In Oct. 2021, Novetzke authored an article published by Scroll.in titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/1007802\/savitribai-phule-the-firebrand-intellectual-who-powerfully-used-the-term-dalit-in-her-poetry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Savitribai Phule: The firebrand intellectual who powerfully used the term \u2018Dalit\u2019 in her poetry<\/a>,\u201d which explores how Phule\u2019s\u00a0groundbreaking work influenced the struggle for the rights of women, Shudras and Dalits in 19th-century India and into the present.<\/p>\n<p>The fellowship, announced by the NEH on January 11, 2022, represents one of 208 humanities projects selected nationwide.
