The last six months or so have been a productive period for scholarly publications at the UW South Asia Center. So far during the 2020-21 academic year, South Asia Center faculty and graduate students published dozens of scholarly articles and book chapters on a wide range of international and South Asia-related topics.<\/p>\n

Graduate Student Publications<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lily Shapiro<\/strong>\u00a0published her article “Mobilizing Volume: Trauma, Surgical Skill, and Clinical Tourism in South India<\/a>” in the 2020 issue of\u00a0Medical Anthropology Quarterly.\u00a0<\/em>Saad Khan\u00a0<\/strong>contributed an essay on queer activism and archives in Bangladesh<\/a> for Shuddhashar Magazine. A book review of Amita Baviskar’s\u00a0Uncivil City: Ecology, Equity, and the Commons in Delhi, <\/em>written by\u00a0Shelby House,<\/strong>\u00a0is forthcoming in\u00a0South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Faculty publications engaged critical issues in architecture and urban planning, science and technology studies, public health, religious studies, and beyond.<\/p>\n

A new book<\/a> from\u00a0Vikramditya Prakash, <\/strong>released by Mapin Publishing,\u00a0examines the multi-faceted work of Indian architect\u00a0and artist Aditya Prakash, and\u00a0Manish Chalana\u00a0<\/strong>edited a new volume on\u00a0Heritage Conservation in Postcolonial India<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Routledge 2020).\u00a0Sareeta Amrute<\/strong> edited a special section<\/a> of\u00a0Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, and Technoscience <\/em>on computing, design, and technology in the Global South,\u00a0and her\u00a0article on racial bias and tech industries<\/a> in the greater Seattle area was published in\u00a0Cultural Anthropology.<\/em><\/p>\n

Taking up questions of migration and development politics,\u00a0Sunila Kale <\/strong>edited a special issue of\u00a0The Journal of Peasant Studies\u00a0<\/em>on rural land dispossession<\/a> in China and India, which featured\u00a0her own writing<\/a> on corporate social responsibility and rural aspirations in eastern India.\u00a0Nathalie Williams<\/strong> addresses similar themes in her co-authored piece on development idealism in\u00a0Migration and Development<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>forthcoming 2021.\u00a0Alka Kurian’<\/strong>s chapter \u201cGender, War and Resistance: The Case of Kashmir” was published in\u00a0South Asian Filmscapes: Transregional Encounters<\/i><\/a> (UW Press 2020).\u00a0Priti Ramamurthy<\/strong> published a research article on translocal householding<\/a> in Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, <\/em>and co-authored an essay on\u00a0decolonial and postcolonial solidarity<\/a> in\u00a0Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy.\u00a0<\/em>Kale <\/strong>and\u00a0Christian Lee Novetzke\u00a0<\/strong>also contributed a book chapter on “The Yogic Ethic and the Spirit of Development” for an edited volume<\/a> entitled\u00a0Political Theologies and Development in South Asia: Transcendence, Sacrifice, and Aspiration<\/em>\u00a0(Manchester University Press 2020).<\/p>\n

In their chapter for\u00a0The Oxford History of Hinduism: Hindu Practice,\u00a0<\/em>Kale\u00a0and Novetzke\u00a0<\/strong>offered critical insights on the emergence of “Legal Yoga”<\/a>\u00a0in modern India. Turning attention to the ancient songs of the\u00a0G\u012btagovinda<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Bh\u0101gavata Pur\u0101\u1e47a<\/em>,\u00a0Heidi Pauwels\u00a0<\/strong>opened new perspectives on “The Vernacular Pulse of Sanskrit”<\/a> in an essay for\u00a0The Journal of Hindu Studies.<\/em>\u00a0Joseph Marino,\u00a0<\/strong>focusing on textual variation in early Buddhist literature, published his chapter on\u00a0\u201cThe G\u0101ndh\u0101r\u012b \u2018Discourse on Pleasure and Pain'” in a new book entitled\u00a0Research on the Sa\u1e43yukta-\u0101gama<\/a> (<\/em>Dharma Drum Publishing Corp. 2020).<\/p>\n

In an article in\u00a0The Indian Economic and Social History Review,<\/em>\u00a0Purnima Dhavan\u00a0<\/strong>shed new light on Deccani literary communities<\/a> in the 18th century, and she contributed a chapter on “Warriors and Zamindars in Mughal Punjab”<\/a> for\u00a0The Oxford Handbook of the Mughal World.\u00a0<\/em>Anand Yang<\/strong>‘s new book\u00a0Empire of Convicts<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(UC Press 2021) delves into the stories of incarcerated Indians in colonial Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

Additionally, faculty experts across departments published new scholarship on Nepal and the Himalayas. David Citrin\u00a0<\/strong>co-authored an article on cardiovascular disease trends in Nepal<\/a>, and\u00a0Randall Kyes\u00a0<\/strong>co-authored a new study on viral resistance in Nepalese primates<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
