Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Application Period Reopened for Summer Study of South Asian Languages<\/strong><\/p>\n

FLAS Fellowships support students from all UW departments and schools in acquiring modern foreign languages and area studies competencies.<\/p>\n

Eligible undergraduate and graduate students who will study Bengali, Hindi, Persian, or Urdu\u00a0<\/strong>(other South Asian languages subject to approval) in summer 2020 will receive $5000 tuition<\/strong> plus $2500 living stipend.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The FLAS Fellowship application system<\/a> for this award is now open. The\u00a0<\/strong>application deadline is 5:00 pm on March 6, 2020. Applicants should carefully read all\u00a0<\/strong>FLAS guidelines<\/a> before applying.<\/strong> Contact the South Asia Center (ntjg@uw.edu) or FLAS Coordinator (flas@uw.edu) for more information.<\/p>\n

The American Institute of Indian Studies<\/a> (AIIS, for study in India) and South Asia Summer Language Institute<\/a> (SASLI, for study at UW-Madison) are good options for summer language study.<\/p>\n

The AIIS application deadline has passed, but they will accept late applications by\u00a0February 19<\/strong>:\u00a0http:\/\/www.indiastudies.org\/language-programs\/<\/a><\/p>\n

The SASLI application deadline is\u00a0April 1<\/strong>, but they ask for applications as soon as possible to ensure enrollments:\u00a0https:\/\/sasli.wisc.edu\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Application materials required for Summer FLAS:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. A written proposal, in essay format, of approximately two single-spaced pages detailing your academic plan and how the FLAS fits in with your education and\/or career plans<\/li>\n
  2. Official or unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities attended<\/li>\n
  3. Relevant test scores (GRE, LSAT, GMAT or other, as relevant to your student status)<\/li>\n
  4. Letters of recommendation – see FLAS FAQ<\/a> for details<\/li>\n
  5. Federal student aid report (SAR)\u00a0or UW Office of Financial Aid award letter<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
