The South Asia Center (SAC) in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington (UW) welcomes applications from scholars based in South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka) to spend one quarter (12 weeks) as a visiting scholar to undertake research, teach one course (subject and level\u2014graduate or undergraduate\u2014to be mutually determined), and engage with the intellectual community at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to collaborate with UW faculty and graduate students who are affiliated with the South Asia Studies program, as well as peers in departments and programs related to the visiting scholar\u2019s areas of academic expertise.<\/p>\n

We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates who work in the fields of Communications, Geography, Urban Studies, and Sociology\/Anthropology and conduct research on media (non-English language) and democracy, or migration and refugee studies. Applications from members of minority communities, especially those who are at the early or middle stages of their careers, are strongly encouraged. Applicants based in countries other than India are especially welcome.<\/p>\n

The South Asia Center will award one fellowship for residence at the University of Washington in Seattle during Spring Quarter 2020 (March 30-June 12, 2020). The successful applicant will receive roundtrip airfare and salary commensurate with their academic experience. SAC is not able to provide health insurance or housing, though the Center will work with the awardee to access campus and off-campus resources to assist with a housing search.<\/p>\n

The South Asia Center is an important intellectual and pedagogical hub for the study of South Asia at the University of Washington. As a National Resource Center, funded by the Title VI program of the United States Department of Education, our mission is to enhance the study of South Asia on campus, in the community, across the Pacific Northwest, and throughout the United States. Eligibility<\/strong>
\nApplicants must<\/strong> be a resident of South Asia at the time of the fellowship to be eligible.<\/p>\n

Applicants must<\/strong> hold a Ph.D. or the highest terminal degree in their field.<\/p>\n

Applicants who have undertaken studies, fellowships, or employment in North America in the previous (2017-2018) or current (2018-2019) academic year are not<\/strong> eligible.<\/p>\n

Citizens of South Asian countries living outside of South Asia are not eligible.<\/p>\n

Application<\/strong>
\nApplications must be submitted online by September 1, 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Applications will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee of UW faculty.<\/p>\n

All applicants will be notified of the status of their applications by September 30, 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A two-page narrative (500 words) explaining your research, the work you intend to complete during the fellowship, a description of your teaching including a few sentences describing potential classes you would like to teach while in residence, and a description of how your time at UW will advance your professional goals and contribute to the intellectual vitality of the South Asia Studies program.<\/li>\n
  4. The name, title, affiliation, and contact information (email and phone number) of one professional reference.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
