{"id":1654,"date":"2015-05-13T12:45:43","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T20:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/?p=1654"},"modified":"2016-05-26T21:14:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-26T21:14:28","slug":"teaching-asia-with-the-seattle-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/news\/teaching-asia-with-the-seattle-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Asia with The Seattle Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>[This article is a repost from the <a href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/jackson\/news\/nie_global_asia_2015.shtml\">Jackson School of International Studies Blog<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over 30 Seattle area K-12 teachers learned the latest on \u201cGlobal Asia: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow\u201d this year thanks to a unique, decade-long collaboration between The Seattle Times and the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.<\/p>\n<p>On April 29, 2015, the group of educators gathered for this \u201cNewspapers In Education\u201d event at The Seattle Times building which featured Jackson School of International Studies Chair and Director of South Asia Studies Professor Anand Yang.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the initiative, Yang has authored four newspaper articles on global Asia for a classroom guide for teachers to use with their students. The articles will appear each Thursday in The Seattle Times, starting from April 30.<\/p>\n<p>Tese Wintz Neighbor, a Jackson School alumna and current seminar leader for the Jackson School\u2019s East Asia Resource Center, presented the classroom guide she authored during the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbor, a former senior director of professional development for the Seattle World Affairs Council, also showed teachers how an Asia-related classroom activity could take place in their own classroom. Participants shared ideas for the activity and received additional Asia-focused classroom materials.<\/p>\n<p>About the \u201cNewspapers in Education\u201d partnership<br \/>\nThe Jackson School started partnering on the \u201cExploring Asia\u201d series with The Seattle Times \u201cNewspapers in Education\u201d in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the series has included about 50 articles covering topics ranging from \u201cChina\u2019s Youth: A Generation like No Other,\u201d \u201cWar and Health: Agent Orange in Vietnam,\u201d \u201cTrash Pickers, Children and Health in India,\u201d to \u201cThailand: Youtube, the Kind, and Media Censorship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These and many other articles, as well as curriculum guides for all nine already-published series are available <a href=\"http:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/earc\/resources\/online.shtml\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Six centers at the Jackson School launched and started the partnership.
