{"id":1600,"date":"2015-09-17T14:26:18","date_gmt":"2015-09-17T22:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/?p=1600"},"modified":"2015-09-17T14:26:18","modified_gmt":"2015-09-17T22:26:18","slug":"faculty-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/news\/faculty-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Selected Faculty Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-212 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/chalana.jpg\" alt=\"chalana\" width=\"90\" height=\"113\" hspace=\"6\" \/>ofessor\u00a0Manish Chalana<\/strong>,\u00a0Assistant Professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/urbdp.be.washington.edu\/\">Urban Design and Planning Department<\/a>, conducted field work in India through the support of\u00a0the Senior Research Fellowship from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiastudies.org\/\">American Institute of Indian Studies<\/a> (AIIS) in 2014 to work on developing a book length manuscript on the history, theory and practice of historic preservation in India from the British Colonial period up to the present.\u00a0While in India he was affiliated with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spa.ac.in\/\">School of Planning and Architecture<\/a> (SPA), where he co-taught the advanced thesis studio for the final year Masters in Architectural Conservation Students. Read more about Professor Chalana&#8217;s field work <a href=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/professor-manish-chalana-on-his-research-in-india\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-238 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/ramamurthy1-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"ramamurthy\" width=\"90\" height=\"113\" hspace=\"6\" \/>Professor and Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gwss.washington.edu\/\">Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies<\/a>, <strong>Priti Ramamurthy <\/strong>is conducting field work in Hyderabad and New Delhi during the 2015-2016 academic year. Professor Ramamurthy, supported by funding from an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acls.org\/\">American Council for Learned Societies<\/a> Research Collaborative Fellowship (2015-17) and an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiastudies.org\/\">American Institute of Indian Studies<\/a> Senior Short Term Fellowships (2016), will be working collaboratively with Vinay Gidwani, associate professor of geography at the University of Minnesota.\u00a0The research will explore the experiences and social relations of informal sector work, including construction, street vending, petty retail, transportation, waste picking, sex work, and domestic service labor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-173\" src=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kale-e1403026702604.jpg\" alt=\"Kale\" width=\"90\" height=\"113\" hspace=\"6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2015-16,<strong> Sunila Kale<\/strong>, Associate Professor in the Jackson School of International Studies and Chair and Director of the South Asia Center and Program,\u00a0will start a new research project on the politics of extractive industries in eastern India. Her project, which will be supported by a Fulbright-Nehru Research Fellowship, explores the relationship between corporations and Corporate Social Responsibility, the local state, and local communities as they come together to carry out peripheral development and rural development programs.\u00a0She continues to work on the politics of infrastructure in India, which formed the basis of her first book project, <i>Electrifying India<\/i>\u00a0(Stanford University Press, 2014).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-223\" src=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/khullar-small.jpg\" alt=\"khullar small\" width=\"90\" height=\"113\" hspace=\"6\" \/>With the support of a Charles A. Ryskamp Fellowship from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acls.org\/\">American Council for Learned Societies<\/a>, <strong>Sonal Khullar<\/strong> will research a second book project\u00a0in 2015-2016, <em>The Art of Dislocation: Conflict and Collaboration in Contemporary Art from South Asia<\/em>. This project identifies collaboration as a hallmark of contemporary art in South Asia and a critical response to globalization since the 1990s. Khullar\u2019s research will take her to the 2015 Venice Biennale, the theme of which is &#8220;All the World\u2019s Futures.&#8221; She will also travel to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dhakaartsummit.org\/\">Dhaka Art Summit<\/a> in 2016, and to various art world centers and sites of art projects in South Asia, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Kopaweda, Lahore, Colombo, and Jaffna.
