Students here at the University of Washington in Assistant Professor Jessica Kaminsky<\/a>‘s Civil Engineering in Developing Countries class were recently featured in UW Today for their work in assisting with the Nepal earthquake relief effort. Using OpenStreetMap<\/a> software, the students have been using satellite images to generate high quality, real-time maps for use in the relief effort.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Find\u00ading that one lit\u00adtle vil\u00adlage with no major high\u00adways and being able to tell some\u00adone that that vil\u00adlage is there is really reward\u00ading. Because if it\u2019s not marked on that map, then there are a lot of cracks that it could slip through,\u201d said civil and environmental engineering grad\u00adu\u00adate stu\u00addent Leigh Allison.<\/p>\n

With each UW stu\u00addent con\u00adtribut\u00ading five hours of assigned emer\u00adgency map\u00adping, the class\u2019 efforts totaled 120 hours of mean\u00ading\u00adful dis\u00adas\u00adter response work, and some students plan to continue that work. Even just a few hours makes a dif\u00adfer\u00adence with thou\u00adsands of vol\u00adun\u00adteers work\u00ading around the\u00a0globe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s almost like say\u00ading, \u2018Don\u2019t for\u00adget us,\u2019\u201d said Lew. \u201cThere\u2019s a ten\u00addency to want to do the major cities and the infra\u00adstruc\u00adture that\u2019s clos\u00adest to the major high\u00adways, but as you get fur\u00adther and fur\u00adther out, there\u2019s still houses out there that are dis\u00adcon\u00adnected. It\u2019s really cool to draw a box around them and say, \u2018there\u2019s a fam\u00adily here, don\u2019t for\u00adget\u00a0them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
