{"id":10438,"date":"2025-10-06T19:10:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T19:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/?p=10438"},"modified":"2025-10-06T19:13:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T19:13:03","slug":"globalizing-nepali-language-instruction-six-years-of-the-uw-summer-nepali-language-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/news\/globalizing-nepali-language-instruction-six-years-of-the-uw-summer-nepali-language-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Globalizing Nepali Language Instruction: Six Years of the UW Summer Nepali Language Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The 2025 session of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/nepal\/programs\/language\/\">UW Nepali Summer Language Program<\/a> marked its sixth anniversary, bringing together students from across the world for intensive Nepali language instruction. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Nepali Summer Language Program, part of the South Asia Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/nepal\/\">Nepali Studies Initiative<\/a>, offers students a gateway for Nepali language and cultural immersion, bringing attention to a part of the world often left out of global conversation. The online structure and affordability of the program allows students from all over the world to participate who would otherwise not have access to Nepali language instruction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here&#8217;s a look at what the program has accomplished since 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>2020-2025 Participant Profile:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the past six summers, this two-week online intensive language training program has included\u00a0<strong>210 <\/strong>students across\u00a0<strong>2<\/strong>\u00a0language learning levels:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li><strong>132<\/strong>\u00a0beginners<\/li>\n<li><strong>78<\/strong>\u00a0advanced beginners \/ low intermediate<\/li>\n<li><strong>71% <\/strong>of applicants have no affiliation with UW<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Participants have hailed from\u00a0<strong>7<\/strong>\u00a0countries:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Bangladesh<\/li>\n<li>Canada<\/li>\n<li>China<\/li>\n<li>India<\/li>\n<li>Netherlands<\/li>\n<li>United Kingdom<\/li>\n<li>United States<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Participants h\u0430ve included:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>artists<\/li>\n<li>public health professionals<\/li>\n<li>archivists<\/li>\n<li>study abroad professionals<\/li>\n<li>college students<\/li>\n<li>heritage learners<\/li>\n<li>nonprofit professionals<\/li>\n<li>researchers<\/li>\n<li>teachers<\/li>\n<li>travelers<\/li>\n<li>healthcare providers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Purpose for studying Nepali:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>studying abroad or conducting research in Nepal (45% of participants)<\/li>\n<li>work or professional need (30% of participants)<\/li>\n<li>improve native or heritage language ability (16%)<\/li>\n<li>upcoming personal or leisure travel to Nepal (9%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Student testimonials:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the heart of the program since its inception has been instructor <a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/people\/binod-shrestha\/\">Binod Shrestha<\/a>.
