You’ll be impressed by the artistic range of practitioners we’ll meet, and better understand how social change can take place on the streets, in the judiciary, in the classroom, as well as on various performance stages. Students in this course explore the needs of medical workers in Nepal. Through shadowing of clinicians, students will define technological needs to improve health care delivery. In addition to coursework, students will have an opportunity to explore Nepal. This 3-week program, developed in conjunction with Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital, provides UW students an opportunity to explore the engineering solutions to problems in global health. Interested in a study abroad program that offers hands-on, project-based learning about Grand Challenges and social innovation that will also build your resume?\u00a0Grand Challenges Impact Lab (GCIL)<\/a>, a UW study abroad program in Bangalore, India, is recruiting students for their Winter 2023 program! The American Institute of Indian Studies<\/a> (AIIS) runs language programs at 12 centers across India. UW students can apply to summer and academic year programs. AIIS provides limited funding to a few students; alongside AIIS applications students should apply to the Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowship<\/a> (FLAS) and the Critical Language Scholarship<\/a> (CLS) to fund language study.<\/p>\n The American Institute of Pakistan Studies and UC Berkeley run the BULPIP<\/a>\u00a0Urdu language program on the campus of the Lahore Institute of Management Studies (LUMS) in Lahore Pakistan. Interested in the intersection of tourism and development in the Himalayas? Check out the Nepal Himalaya exploration seminar.\u00a0Accepting applications<\/a>\u00a0now!\u00a0In this 22-day exploration seminar, participants will examine how the sometimes competing forces of tourism and development are shaping contemporary Nepal. Together, they will trek through part of the Kali Gandaki Valley in the shadows of the famous Annapurna Mountains, visit ancient pilgrimage sites, explore the back alleys of Kathmandu, and use ethnographic methods to learn more about Nepal.<\/div>\nGrand Challenges Impact Lab<\/a><\/h3>\n

\nAcademics: 15 credits. The program offers an active, hands-on learning laboratory and is open to graduate students and undergraduate junior and senior students from any department. Students will work in teams to analyze and propose solutions to grand challenges – things like food security, clean water access, and clean energy use.
\nApply<\/a><\/p>\nWeaving Stories: Textiles, Fabrics, and Feminism in South India<\/h3>\n

\nAcademics: 15 credits.\u00a0We will look at the historical and contemporary significance of weaving from political statements made by Gandhi and his followers during the anti-colonial struggle for independence through the rallying cry of urban textile workers organizing for fair wages and safe working conditions. How did colonialism influence weaving? How do gender, sexuality, and class operate in these weaving spaces? What is the role of globalization in shaping this centuries-old craft into an export-driven apparel industry?
\nView program<\/a><\/p>\nBioengineering Nepal: Technology Development for Global Health<\/h3>\n
\nLocation: Kathmandu, Nepal
\nAcademics: 5 credits. In this program, you will to explore engineering solutions to global health challenges in Nepal. Working with doctors, health workers, and Nepalese students, you will use the engineering design process to identify and clarify technological needs to improve health care delivery.
\nView program<\/a><\/p>\niSchool India: Systems Analysis of Infrastructure using Open Data Platform<\/h3>\n
\nLocations: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad
\nAcademics: 6 credits. This program challenges students to engage in problem-based learning to investigate a data-driven challenge related to national transportation networks in an emerging economy with numerous infrastructure problems. Students will leverage several large data sets available on Open Government Data (OGD) Platform India. The case study that students will address is co-written by corporate professionals from Microsoft and ConnX Solutions (subsidiary of Software AG) who have significant presence in-country providing support to Ministry of Railways, a state-owned public utility of the government of India.
