{"id":4245,"date":"2016-12-30T03:41:39","date_gmt":"2016-12-30T03:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/?page_id=4245"},"modified":"2016-12-30T03:41:39","modified_gmt":"2016-12-30T03:41:39","slug":"singing-tagore","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/southasia\/singing-tagore\/","title":{"rendered":"Singing Tagore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/unnamed-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the 30th of November, the sound of the\u00a0<em>sarod\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0<em>tabla<\/em> graced Brechemin Auditorium at the University of Seattle as a group of musicians got together to sing and celebrate the musical legacy of Rabindranath Tagore.<\/p>\n<p>The Bengali polymath visited Seattle in the autumn of 1916, his first stop on a tour of America.<\/p>\n<p>The event began with an introduction to Tagore and his work by\u00a0visual artist and writer Donald Fels, followed by sound artist and composer Robert Millis playing two records of Tagore reading his own poetry.<\/p>\n<p>The stage was then given over to the group of talented musicians whose dulcet tunes and rapturous ragas enlivened the night. On the sarod was Raja Ray, and Deepashri Joglekar was behind the harmonium, while Shailendra Upadhye\u2019s tabla struck magic throughout the concert.<\/p>\n<p>The program began with \u2018Aamar Mukti Aaloy Aaloy\u2019 sung by the musicians as a group in a beautifully lilting Kedar. Saswati Pal followed with raag Bihag, singing \u2018Aami Keboli Swapono Korechhi Bapono.\u2019 Next up, Anandamoy Bhattacharya sang a beautiful rendition of \u2018Godhuli Gagone Meghe\u2019 in a blend of raga Kedar and Chayant. Swati Banerjee next sung \u2018Aaji e Anandasandhya\u2019 in raag Purvi, followed by \u2018E Ki Labonye Purno Praano\u2019 by Siddharta Pal in raag Mahishuri.
