The symposium, which coincided with Tasveer\u2019s 10<sup>th<\/sup> Seattle South Asian Film Festival (SSAFF), provided a unique opportunity for academic scholars, community members, and filmmakers to come together to discuss the vibrant worlds of contemporary film and filmmaking in South Asia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2177\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 211px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Sharma-panel1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2177\" src=\"http:\/\/southasia.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Sharma-panel1-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"(L to R) Deepti Misri, Bidisha Biswas, Rakesh Sharma\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>(L to R) Deepti Misri, Sanjay Kak<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Participants presented papers on a wide range of topics including minority and caste identities, gender, human rights, and nationalism. Paper presentations were interspersed with four film screenings and discussions. Central to the conversations that emerged was the widespread commitment among visiting filmmakers to refuse to be colonized by capitalism and to seek alternative ways to carry out their work. With reference to his film <em>Red Ant Dream<\/em>\u00a0India\u2019s leading documentary filmmaker Sanjay Kak stated that it was this kind of commitment along with easier access to digital technology that\u00a0had freed filmmakers from the stranglehold of state censorship. In discussing how he used footage for his work-in-progress, \u00a0<em>Aftershock<\/em>, another of India\u2019s leading documentary filmmakers, Rakesh Sharma, told the audience that he seeks to agitate minds and mobilize a combative relationship with the audience, so that people form their own opinions rather than simply \u201cbuying into things that are circulating around\u201d them. Other filmmakers who presented were Sri Lankan filmmaker, Prasanna Vithanage, with <em>Silence in the Courts<\/em>; Hemal Trivedi (from the Indian diaspora) and Mohammad Naqvi (from the Pakistani diaspora) with\u00a0<em>Among the Believers<\/em>; and Thenmozhi Soundarajan, \u00a0who presented on her group\u2019s project #dalitwomenfight. Approximately 150 students, faculty, and community members attended portions of the two-day symposium.
