Study Abroad

Two programs provide funds for overseas language study for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Foreign Language and Area Studies ( FLASapplications for 2017-18 will open in mid-October 2016.  FLAS Fellowships support undergraduate, graduate and professional students in acquiring modern foreign languages and area or international studies competencies.   Students from all UW departments and professional schools are encouraged to apply. FLAS Fellowships are available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.  Contingent on funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the eight National Resource Centers of the University of Washington’s Jackson School of International Studies will offer Academic Year 2016-17 and Summer 2016 FLAS Fellowships in the following languages:

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) competition scholarships fund summer overseas intensive language programs in designated languages (Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu). Undergrads and graduate students are eligible. CLS funds summer study at all levels. See the website for more information.
