On February 1, 2019, representatives of the Pacific Northwest Canadian Studies Consortium<\/a> gathered at the University of Washington for the consortium\u2019s annual meeting. The theme of this year\u2019s meeting was \u201cTeaching Canada, Learning Canada.\u201d Fittingly, several students from the Canadian Studies Center were on hand to share their experiences and answer questions from the group.<\/p>\n

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship recipient Samantha Farquhar<\/a> talked about her time in Qu\u00e9bec learning about marine-protected areas and the Canadian approach to marine policy. She also spoke about how her time abroad allowed her to explore her family connections to the region, and how much of a personal impact the experience had.<\/p>\n

Current Corbett British Columbia-Washington International Exchange Program scholars Julia Lindsay<\/a> and Parsa Shani<\/a>, both University of British Columbia students, talked about their time so far at the University of Washington and some of the cultural and political differences that have stood out to them. Elizabeth Mayer<\/a>, an International Studies student minoring in Arctic Studies, spoke about her work as a Pacific Northwest Economic Region intern.<\/p>\n

All the students shared how enjoyable and eye-opening their experiences have been, and stressed the value of cultural and academic exchange as a way to better understand people and place.<\/p>\n
