About

Valentina Petrova, outreach coordinator for the Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, is originally from Varna, Bulgaria. She holds a dual master’s degree from the University of Washington, in public administration and international studies. She is a former journalist who covered K-12 education, among many beats. Val has also worked as a public relations professional for high tech clients including Intel and Microsoft. She is passionate about education equity issues and completed her master’s research on international comparative education policy. In graduate school, she volunteered on the planning committee for the “Forces of Change: Law, Policy and Equity in Washington State Education” conference hosted by the Education, Law and Policy Society at the UW School of Law. She was also on the leadership team of the Education & Social Policy student interest group at the Evans School.

Her role at the Ellison Center includes event management, collaboration with other centers and departments across UW, and K-12 teacher outreach.

When she is not at the Ellison Center, Val likes to volunteer for education and social justice causes, such as the Language Bank at the King & Kitsap counties’ chapter of the American Red Cross. She also runs her own qualitative data analysis consulting venture and fills her spare time with Yoga and walks around Green Lake with her fiancé and their dog.
