About

Joan “Joni” Marts (she/her/hers) is the Senior Academic Adviser at the University of Washington Jackson School of International Studies (UW JSIS) Office of Academic Services (OAS). She has been with JSIS since 2009. Her first name is pronounced: Joe-Nee.

Here at JSIS OAS, I… LOVE advising undergraduate students and their families! I advise in all areas of the Jackson School’s six majors and seventeen minors, helping students see their areas of strength through an international lens. I communicate daily with campus departments and offices to stay aware of new policies and the best practices needed by our students. Curriculum changes and reform hold a high interest for me, and I enjoy working with faculty and staff about the nuances of JSIS courses and how they benefit our students.

I like thinking about and studying… how artistic work (at any level) can have an impact on thinking and interpretation. I am a published photographer, with my natural inclination leaning toward portraits with journalistic components. Some of my favorite photos were taken in Morocco and Italy.

My first year in college… I was clueless! The UW population was much bigger than my hometown, and I honestly had no direction. With wonderful academic advising, life experience, and self-awareness, I returned to the UW (twice) to complete my degree. Along the way, I learned how important guidance can be to all hopeful degree-seekers.

Fun facts: Years ago, I collaborated with my husband on a documentary film about the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) training camp. It was an unparalleled experience to film this rigorous training from inside its ranks, and my regard for the SFD is utmost. I also enjoy all types of expressive endeavors, including fiber arts, garden design, and writing. In my head, there is a book just waiting to be written!
