Middle East Center Sponsors 2016 “Get Global” Youth Conference

“Get Global” Youth Conference

June 1, 2016

More than 175 high schools students from schools districts around the Puget Sounds attended the twelfth annual Get Global Youth Conference organized and hosted by the students in the OneWorld Now! Global Leadership and Foreign Languages Program. Held on May 21, at the UW Ethnic Cultural Center, the Middle East Center is a major sponsor of the Get Global Conference, which highlights students of the OneWorld Now! program in a conference of their own design and focused on issues of most concern to them. This year’s conference included student-presenters in TED-type talks, student-organized small seminars, and cultural music and dance performances. Presentations and seminars this year addressed topics such as Islamophobia, cultural identity, teen mental health, and social consciousness. The Get Global conference aims to empower youth and young social entrepreneurs to take action on important global issues. OneWorld Now! serves low-income and youth of color in an innovative global leadership training program coupled with Arabic, Chinese or Korean language training;  along with summer study-travel to the Middle East and East Asia for its students.
