Those note located in the D.C. area are invited to join the talk online. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/gwiks-late-industrialization-tradition-social-change-in-south-korea-tickets-859424340337?aff=oddtdtcreator\">Please click here to register<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">In Dr. Yong-Chool Ha\u2019s latest book,<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">he examines\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">a\u00a0<\/span>paradox in Kore<span lang=\"en\">a<\/span>\u2019s economic development<span lang=\"en\">:\u00a0an ultra<\/span>-modern\u00a0<span lang=\"en\">industrial\u00a0<\/span>economy has been achieved,\u00a0<span lang=\"en\">yet\u00a0<\/span>traditional networks of obligation and solidarity,\u00a0<span lang=\"en\">such as<\/span>\u00a0blood, school<span lang=\"en\">,<\/span>\u00a0and regional ties have persisted, and even become more deeply reinforced, profoundly affecting the fundamental\u00a0aspects of Korean politics and\u00a0<span lang=\"en\">socio-economic relations<\/span>.\u00a0<span lang=\"en-US\">Ha\u00a0<\/span>contends that\u00a0<span lang=\"en\">this paradox\u00a0<\/span>is not accidental<span lang=\"en\">, and that the course of Korea\u2019s late economic development shaped and entrenched these \u201cprimordial\u201d ties into Korea\u2019s politics, society, and economy. Thus, the persistence and predominance of these ties, what\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">he<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0call<\/span><span lang=\"en\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0\u201cneofamilism,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>requires an explanation as to\u00a0<i>when, why<\/i><span lang=\"en\">,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>how<\/i>\u00a0it arose.\u00a0<i><span lang=\"en\">\u201cLate Industrialization, Tradition, and Social Change in South Korea\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i>is about the social consequences of late industrialization.
