JSIS Readers/Graders

Jackson School Readers/Graders

What do readers/graders do, and who are they?

  • A reader/grader is a paid (hourly) student employee who assists faculty with reading/grading responsibilities.
    • The time that a reader/grader can devote to your course is limited to 1.5 hours per enrolled student over the quarter (e.g., for 50 students, the reader/grader’s available time over the quarter is 75 hours).
  • Job responsibilities:
    • Reading/Grading exams – faculty need clear grading expectations/rubrics for exams
    • Reading/grading reflections or writing assignments – faculty must provide grading rubrics for all writing assignments.
  • They can be graduate or undergraduate students.

What do readers/graders NOT do?

  • A reader/grader is not expected to attend classes. While they may attend one or two total lectures (relevant to the assignment they are grading), the overall expectation is that they do not attend lectures. They are an hourly employee and their time is spent reading/grading and not attending class.
  • They do not have a teaching role and, therefore, cannot teach quiz sections or segments of a lecture/class.

How do faculty qualify for reader/grader support?

Enrolled students by the start of the course:

  • 40-75 students = ONE reader/grader
  • 75-100 students = TWO reader/graders

Reader/Grader Compensation

  • The payment is submitted in one lump sum at the end of the quarter.
  • The hourly rate is $21.57 for this AY (2024-2025).
  • The compensation formula for the reader/grader is:
    • TOTAL COMPENSATION  =  NUMBER OF STUDENTS  x  1.5  x  HOURLY RATE

Procedure

  1. Confirm your course qualifies for a reader/grader, and how many (questions, email: Jaime Fitch (jgrocock@uw.edu))
  2. Identify where you want help from a reader(s)/grader(s).  As the expert on your course, syllabus, and assessment plan, you need to help identify a reader grader and their responsibilities.

    • If you need help identifying potential JSIS graduate students who could be graders, please get in touch with the JSIS Graduate Advisor, Jesús Hidalgo, jhidalgo@uw.edu
    • The instructor must provide the reader/grader with a list of duties based on the reader/grader’s total available time.
  4. Please read through the Contract Form so you can complete it to hire the student.
  5. Complete the Contract Form and sign it.
    • Instructor and reader/grader MUST sign this form.
  6. Upload & Submit the signed Contract to the JSIS funding system.
