Edited by Jackson School <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/people\/andrea-arai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acting Assistant Professor Andrea Gevurtz Arai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the book is the outcome of a multi-year cross-college and cross-regional research initiative at the University of Washington focused on creative forms of grassroots resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The volume grew out of a project launched in 2021 by Arai and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/be.uw.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">College of Built Environments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/larch.be.uw.edu\/people\/jeff-hou\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeff Hou<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with support from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/globalaffairs\/2025\/06\/05\/interdisciplinary-collaboration-highlights-social-change-projects-across-east-asia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Office of Global Affairs\u2019 Global Innovation Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Their collaboration aimed to examine how young people and grassroots communities in East Asia are responding to issues such as income inequality, labor precarity, environmental degradation, <\/span>ultra-low birth rate phenomena, and social disconnection<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The project brought together scholars, scholar-activists, artists, and students from across East Asia and the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With additional support from the UW <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/eacenter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">East Asia Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/global\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Center for Global Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/japan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Center for Japanese Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/korea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Center for Korea Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">China Studies Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/taiwan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taiwan Studies Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/larch.be.uw.edu\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Landscape Architecture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the project culminated in a virtual conference in 2022.
