{"id":2796,"date":"2019-11-01T20:34:51","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T20:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/japan\/?p=2796"},"modified":"2021-03-19T16:42:26","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T16:42:26","slug":"book-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jsis.washington.edu\/japan\/news\/book-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Justin Jesty wins 2019 ASAP Book Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Justin Jesty, associate professor of Japanese language and literature, was recently awarded the 2019 ASAP (Association for the Study of the Arts of the Present) Book Prize for his book titled <em>Art and Engagement in Early Postwar Japan<\/em> (2018).<\/div>\n<p>In assessing the work, ASAP wrote \u201cA virtuosic study of the intersection of art and politics, Justin Jesty\u2019s\u00a0<em>Art and Engagement in Early Postwar Japan\u00a0<\/em>presents an original and important contribution to the fields of global contemporary art criticism and East Asian studies. But it is also a profound study of the art of one country that reaches outward toward other contexts and disciplines (\u2026) shows how overlooked genres and amateur and collective artistic practices attempted to shape democratic culture from below amidst the radical uncertainty of the immediate postwar period in Japan. \u201c<\/p>\n<div>Jesty was enthusiastic at receiving the award and expressed his thanks for the support of the UW Japan Studies Program, particularly its major contribution to the subvention for the book.<\/div>\n<p>ASAP is an international, nonprofit association dedicated to discovering and articulating the aesthetic, cultural, ethical, and political identities of the contemporary arts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justin Jesty, associate professor of Japanese language and literature, was recently awarded the 2019 ASAP (Association for the Study of the Arts of the Present) Book Prize for his book titled Art and Engagement in Early Postwar Japan (2018).
