Nearly fifteen years ago, the University of Washington Center for Human Rights was established by the Washington state legislature, and tasked with ensuring that UW human rights research spurs real-world impacts, whether here in Washington or elsewhere in the world. One of the most transformational ways we\u2019ve lived into that mission is through developing our Center\u2019s unique model\u2014one that connects students and faculty to community-based partners and policy makers, working together to create change.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As UWCHR director Angelina Godoy writes in our 2022-23 annual report<\/a>, this model offers multiple dividends: it gives students \u201cunparalleled learning opportunities to get involved in research with real-world relevancy; our partner organizations gain the insights of academic experts, tailored to the needs of their day-to-day efforts; and faculty relish the opportunity to contribute knowledge to real-world justice efforts. For most of us, these are among our most fulfilling professional experiences. For me, this vision captures the promise at the heart of the modern public university.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anniversary Kick-off Bowling Happy Hour<\/strong>
\nOctober 5th, 2023
\nTo celebrate the beginning of our 15th anniversary, we hosted a happy hour bowling event bringing together affiliates of the Center for Human Rights.\u00a0 As we gathered, faces from the last 15 years reflected the breadth of work that UWCHR has done\u2014past and current student researchers and steering committee members, partners, colleagues, friends, family, and donors around the room. Creating spaces where we can come together and share information, reflect on experiences, and deepen relationships strengthens our ability to do the work of advancing human rights here at home, and beyond.<\/p>\n
