Human Rights Research Internship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Washington Center for Human Rights (UWCHR) invites applications from (UW) undergraduates interested in forming part of our access to information\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>\u00a0team. We are recruiting\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-m_931408019763263897gmail-il\">interns<\/span>\u00a0to conduct\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>\u00a0on immigrant rights concerns in contemporary Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>Since January 2017, UWCHR has conducted\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>\u00a0in partnership with local immigrant rights organizations examining collaboration between Washington state law enforcement agencies and Customs and Border patrol in ways that raise rights concerns. Selected students will be trained in the use of\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-m_931408019763263897gmail-il\">FOIA<\/span>\u00a0and Washington state records law for obtaining information from government agencies, and will be involved in the process of formulating new requests, tracking the progress of existing cases, responding to inquiries from government agencies as necessary, and cataloging the information received. Student researchers will contribute throughout the year to the Center&#8217;s ongoing\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>, are required to attend weekly meetings and participate in team decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>This is a good opportunity for students interested in human rights and considering a future in law, policy, or\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>. <strong>It requires great patience and extraordinary attention to detail; willingness to comply with often-dull bureaucratic procedures; and an interest in questions of government transparency and freedom of information.<\/strong> It also requires a commitment to human rights in practice: the best applicants will have an understanding of human rights that stems not only from coursework, but from lived experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REQUIRED<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EXTREMELY DETAIL ORIENTED, organized, and reliable<\/li>\n<li>Ability to commit 10-15 hours per week for at least two (ideally three) quarters in 2019-20 (ideally to begin in summer 2019)<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work independently, in collaboration with a\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>\u00a0team of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to commit to project confidentiality agreement<\/li>\n<li>Some previous familiarity with, and a serious commitment to, human rights in Latin America and\/o immigrant rights in the United States<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DESIRED but not required<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spanish language ability<\/li>\n<li>Experience working for social justice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Compensation\/perks<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-m_931408019763263897gmail-il\">internship<\/span>\u00a0can be taken for credit<\/li>\n<li>For the right candidate, a stipend may be available ($3000\/quarter)<\/li>\n<li>Provides hands-on\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>\u00a0experience<\/li>\n<li>Possibly could lead to involvement in other areas of\u00a0<span class=\"m_6087154552880905641gmail-il\">research<\/span>, depending on student&#8217;s interest and skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To apply, send a cover letter and cv\/resume to Angelina Godoy at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:agodoy@uw.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agodoy@uw.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apply soon; applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Washington Center for Human Rights (UWCHR) invites applications from (UW) undergraduates interested in forming part of our access to information\u00a0research\u00a0team.
